This is one of two structured courses offered to professionals who work with those who suffer. It is particularly suitable for personal injury, criminal and family lawyers, doctors, nurses, social workers, people working in the emergency services and child protection.
Secondary Traumatic Stress is unavoidable. It is the natural stress which occurs in people who work with those who suffer on a daily basis
Course Aims
- to introduce the concept of secondary traumatic stress [STS] as a natural response to working with traumatised and troubled clients.
- to explain the differences and similarities between STS compassion stress, compassion fatigue, burnout, PTSD and vicarious traumatisation.
- to provide tools for self assessment.
- to give guidance on using internal and external resources for dealing with STS.
- to provide tools for preventing the development of STS symptoms.
Course Objectives:
By the end of the course delegates will:-
- Possess a basic understanding of the nature of STS and the different terminology used to describe it.
- Understand how STS can affect them impact them personally and professionally
- Be able to perform a self diagnosis on the presence of STS
- Know where and how to access external and internal resources for dealing with STS
- have created a self care plan
- possess tools which, if implemented, will assist in preventing the development of secondary stress.
